The legend tells us about a very beautiful woman, who lived in 9th century, Tamatsukuri Komachi. She was suffering from a terrible skin disease. She traveled around the country in search of a cure and once came to Musashi Kokubunji Temple, which was built on the territory of the former Musashino Province around 8th century. On 21st day of praying a child appeared in front of her, and showed her the way to the pond, and told her to bath in it, and then the child disappeared. She followed the child’s words and her disease was cured. She got back her original beauty (masugata). The pond was named after the legend: Masugata no Ike - the pond of a true figure.
