Designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, its architectural brilliance is complemented by the park-like landscape of the estate and a comprehensive collection of original decorative arts...

Lyndhurst was first conceived in the minds of architect A.J. Davis and William Paulding who constructed the country villa in 1838 and called it “Knoll”. Lyndhurst, also known as the Jay Gould estate. Something interesting, that many probably do not know, is that these many millionaires who made money on railroads, were shipping humans from one part of the country to another. Sometimes slaves and sometimes not. It's connected also with the "fur trade", which is another way to say traffic in humans, in that case mostly Native Americans and French trappers. At no time in the history of mankind did the demand for beaver furs equal the supply, nor the efforts that went into procuring it. Food for thought, so to speak.
