The machine's shape represents a place of delight in which was arranged the flight of an aerostatic balloon. The fireworks are part of the annual homage paid by the King of Naples and Sicily to Pope Pius VI on a feast day for apostles Peter and Paul, June 29, 1785.

I was thinking the same thing. There's still the difficulty of making such precise measurements, but having a balloon or other vehicle capable of lifting one above the surface of the Earth seems to make this much more trivial than one might believe. I wonder also if it wouldn't be possible to bring some "primitive" form of pinhole camera along for the trip upwards. I'm a total layman when it comes to hot air balloons and the like. I understand heat fills the balloon and the balloon rises, especially as weights/ballast are dropped. If there was a way, perhaps with ropes or other devices, to keep the vehicle stable, and one had a pinehole camera, you could easily reproduce a very accurate image of the ground below you. With surveying and plenty of time/patience, I would think cartography of this caliber would be achievable. That's a lot of if's that I used, but it's possible, at the very list.

A thought just struck me - what if some of these images by Piranesi are actual designs (pre-construction) rather than aerial view maps?

No problem with drawings and schematics in your head before putting to paper. Scientist, physics, engineering all require a certain amount of disciplined thought. Our mind is so complex that one can choose and train yourself to think in that manner. Focus, discipline, motivation, attention span, being a solitary person helps to focus.

One of the support teams that we worked with had two individuals, M.I.T. M.S. math, University of Montana M.S. math, that played chess on an imaginary board, in the bush at night. The games could go on for days. I think that most people have those abilities, we purposely were not informed about our humans abilities. My opinion.

I have been listening to the audio book of Wizard - The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla.
It includes a lot of autobiographical info from Tesla.
For one thing, it seems like his mother's side of the family possessed some clairvoyant gifts. His Mom was quite the inventor herself, making all kinds of labor-saving gadgets for their home.
Also listening to his explanation of how he sees the world and his proclivity for obsessive behavior, I am strongly reminded of Temple Grandin, the autistic lady who has revolutionized the slaughterhouse industry. She, too, can visualize entire schematics in her head and, like Tesla, the most challenging part for her was getting her ideas down on paper so others could understand her unique perspective.

Just food for thought, I have all kinds of suspicions about Tesla, too, but I really wonder if we are dealing with a genius, an autistic, a phony or just someone who never forgot the "good old days"?
