Great post, as for the insects, I have a theory most insects use ion propulsion to fly. Every insect wing has microscopic hairs under the wing, in the shape of a voroni pattern, mathmatically perfect, when the wings vibrate just right, they create a stronger draft by shooting energy off the tips of the hairs and down to the second wing.
There are multiple research articles on how magnetic fields have effected the flight of insects when they had wings, and those that didnt were not effected. Its most obvious in giant beetles, but I believe the Egyptians figured out how vibration/sound can create energy.
