There are many examples of disappeared crews from ships. The crew is gone but their belongings are still on board. Lifeboats are missing sometimes.
What reason could there be to take only the crew and not cargo? Pirates are not a good explanation here. They would have taken the cargo.
I understand if the crew AND cargo disappeared. No witnesses. It could have been a cover and something else was intended by the crew. They may have used the mission as an excuse to start over in a different place.
We know how one man disappeared. Suicide. Donald Crowhurst was a contestant in the Golden Globe Race boat race across the world. He knew he was going to lose. He attempted to fake his location with false coordinates. He was found out and he threw himself overboard. Perhaps some of the other disappeared crews knew they would not be received kindly when they returned and abandoned the ship.
Or was it:
Disease? It was/is common to throw dead people off the boats.
Bad weather?
Giant squid? They are real BTW
