This one is for the geography buffs. The image is actually from this thread. 1969 Soyuz-4 and 5, Earth from space, no fisheye lens, and flat horizon.

I’m puzzled. Soyuz flew over it in 1969. If we can’t find it, I will start looking for it on some other “non-traditional” maps.

Where is this “Woodpecker” Island at?

Looks more like an arrowhead to me.

Adding in a wider view so folks can also see the shoreline near it.

I've also tried putting together a composite of the two.

And the flight path I found.

@Dirigible also if you move your flight path map here, would be super great.

Here is a couple additional ones.

Sure it's water? Looks like it could be part of a mountain showing through clouds and or snow caps.

I think this might be it in Lake Baikal. Except it's not an island anymore.

Sure looks very similar. Can a peninsular look like an island?

This peninsula is only 40 miles long. How low are they flying then? Images we get from ISS today appear to have totally different proportions.

I'm confused... The original picture had it as an island, then flameto found a map showing it "hooked" to the mainland, and now you post a picture of it being an island again.... Is this due to it freezing over in the winter?

Whoa, just read it contains more water than all the great lakes combined and is considered the oldest lake in the world.

And here is a map of the area circa "1700". That lake has a lot of history, sites of wars, Trans Siberia railroad goes through there at the south and required required 200 bridges and 33 tunnels.

May be that little connecting appendix gets flooded. My only guess.
