Gotta start by giving credit to KorbenDallas who set me on the right path in a previous post where he had mentioned the connection between the Know-Nothing Party and the Native American Republican Party. I was recently going through an old dictionary of Americanisms when I came across the entry for Hindoos. The book claims that their presidential candidate Daniel Ullman earned them this name because of his purported connection to Calcutta. Interestingly, wikipedia states that the man never ran for president, and was soundly defeated in his run governor of NY.

Digging a bit more deeply, I was shocked to find other websites discussing this Know-Nothing/Hindoo connection. This lovely site makes the claim that the party opposed to them was referred to explicitly as the "Anti-Hindoo" party, a name which seems patently ridiculous if based solely on a rumored connection to a single candidate being born in India. This book discusses how these Anti-Hindoos would end up as Republicans by the mid 50s, which implies that their adversaries would not have been on the party of Lincoln.

The connection between the Southern States and the far east is oft unexplored, but holds many secrets. I am reminded of an old political cartoon depicting Jefferson Davis praising Allah for the outcome of a battle, and I can only imagine what the cartoonists were thinking. Here's hoping this group can help connect the dots between the two a bit more clearly.
