For what it's worth, I found a couple corresponding newspaper articles from 1894 regarding Chicago/Chilaga.
From Feb. 18th, 1894 Chicago Tribune, pg. 16, Chilaga is found on an old map from 1615:
And a response six days later on Feb. 24th, on page 9, claims Chilaga is actually Chilapa misspelled, and the river is the River Grijalva in Yucatan:
