A near perfectly in tact Roman mosaic floor was discovered in Verona. In the twitter comments people ask why it’s buried in dirt and the geniuses bring up the ridiculous “cultural layer” nonsense.

Does that really look 2000 years old? I had ceramic buried under my house from the 50s that looked older than that...

It doesn't look a hundred years old let alone 2,000. The Roman label yet again preventing further investigation of what has been uncovered. They do not discover things they uncover them.
There are encaustic tiles in the fire places in this house which from their look & composition date from the time the house was built ,1910, and they literally look their age. These pristine mosaics also look their age especially the one in the op. It is in better condition than the tiles here are.
What that age truly is is anyones guess as proving their actual age is impossible.

Tile works are usually automatically associated with the Roman period but they were very popular during the communist times too. There's a decaying communist monument in Bulgaria which had some amazing tile pictures.

Also interesting that this buried villa has been known for around 100 years, but it took them a long time to actually dig, or should I say, create the mosaic in the first place. Either fake or from one of the last cataclysms (1700 or 1800).

The city council of Negrar di Valpolicella announced that "after decades of unsucessful attempts we were finally able to dig up parts of the buried villa".

After countless decades of unsuccessful attempts, part of the paving and foundations of the Roman Villa located north of the capital, discovered by scholars over a century ago, have finally been brought to light.
The technicians of the Superintendence of Verona, with a targeted core drilling of the soil, are partially discovering the remains of the artefact still present under a few metres of earth, with a precise objective: to identify the exact extension and the exact location of the ancient building.
Subsequently, the Superintendence will liaise with the owners of the area and the Municipality to identify the most appropriate ways to make this archaeological treasure hidden under our feet available and visitable.
The result will not come soon and significant resources will be needed. But it is important, finally, to trace the way.
The Municipality will give all the necessary collaboration and thanks from now on the professionals of the Superintendence and the owners of the area for the unity of intent and availability with which they are pursuing the project.

It's so annoying to walk through the 5 inches of dirt that have accumulated in my house, my backyard and the streets of my city during the last centuries. Imagine there was a way to clean dirt. Crazy idea, but nothing is impossible. I also lost so many things like ceramic plates and gold coins that I have accidentally put into the dirt but now I can't find them anymore, so I guess I just leave them there for future generations to excavate. All we can do as society is destroy all our houses at one point and build on top of the dirt.

How did they get it so clean while dirt is still piled on the sides. As a gardener this could save me hours of work each year.

I enjoy watching this guy's travels around former soviet republics and he shows various soviet mosaics he comes across. For example this soviet built bus stop mosaic in the republic of Mari El:

Cheers! ?
