Wow, fascinating. This thread hits close to home, since I live in Nevada and visit Virginia City often. Something that blows my mind is how deep the Combination Shaft was, at 3,250 ft. It makes you wonder if they had more advanced technology than just pick axes and dynamite, or perhaps it was there before the prospectors arrived, dug by a previous civilization.

That map that Static had referred to had the "seven cities of gold" on it. Thought it was Utah or near Salt Lake, but quite possibly it was near the heavy concentration of mines in NV.
It definitely looks like a plasma event or weapon and then a big flood sometime. Desert areas were formerly flooded out, the good soil washed away. Grand Canyon, fo sho.
As well as my "little" local Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Twenty minutes from my house, just in case another plasma event cometh. Granite is pretty HARD.
