Only thing I can think of to explain would be if the area was covered in water or something like silt or sand

Hah, thanks. I needed a chuckle. And, as much as I laughed, It's just as plausible as anything I can come up with for this thing. Maybe more so.

My initial thought was a memory of throwing heavy things up in the air as high as we could with levers/rubber hoses/etc just to see it land and/or make a little crater (bonus for it breaking something we'd put under it). I think a lot of kids did one way or another. If you were so "in control" that you treated others like ants you might be tempted to haul various chunks of this or that and drop them from very great heights just to mess with the locals. "The Gods must be Crazy!"
