There were people who survived who knew what happened and they removed them (the Inquisition, Insane/Genocide Asylums). It all makes sense when one can step back, dissolve their attachment to the indoctrination and think objectively.
I wanted to say that the concept of lunatic asylums feels both evil and familiar to me. It was known in the past that once you went in you didn't come out and some of the reasons for admission back then seem outrageous now. It's as if anyone who wasn't "normal" was sent in as a precaution to the controllers as they refuse to accept the new order or may simply know too much.
