What is this place?
A view of the city of Istanbul.

When was this taken?
I cannot find this exact image on wikipedia or other art sites.
Carlo Bossoli (1815 – 1884)
Most likely it was taken in 1840 because there are similar images of Istanbul during that time period.

Who took it?
Carlo Bossoli

What do the experts say about this person?
Carlo Bossoli was an Italian painter and lithographer.

According to Wikipedia:
Prior to the late 1890s color photography was strictly the domain of a very few intrepid experimenters willing to build their own equipment, do their own color-sensitizing of photographic emulsions, make and test their own color filters and otherwise devote a large amount of time and effort to their pursuits.

Something like the three color method would be the bare minimum to produce something like this or anything that is colored.
This was suggested in 1855 by a physicist.

Taken in 1861
Well I hope that is wrong since that would be quite embarrassing.
Now this monster is said to be the first color photograph ever.

What do lithographs usually look like?

Here is a Genoease Fort of Kale

This is a lithograph of a Tartar's Children School.

Now, if you look carefully at the original photo, you can see the reflection of the clouds on the water, and the reflection of boats on the water as well. Also notice the deep blues of the water and the variation of that nice blue color.
Now I am wondering, is this actually a photograph?
Unfortunately I cannot find a clearer photograph of this scene, but it would be nice to look at the original.
That looks like a nice park too. I wish I could go there when the city was that beautiful.

Finally, here is another work by the artist depicting Istanbul.

Difficult to say from such a small image. Tell tale signs of photography are lens distortions and depth of field. Would like to see it full size. Part of my own research leads me to believe many phographs were painted over to hide their photographic origins, this could be one such image.

It's not a photograph. This is most certainly a well detailed painting. All the background starts to lose detail just like paintings do. Look at the brush strokes to make the trees for example.

That said, it's still an awesome historical relic of what that area looked liked. With some embellishment from the artist, like adding people and boats.

Thanks for posting this. Cheers! ?
