Wacky intro: The Villa Farnese, also known as Villa Caprarola, is a mansion in the town of Caprarola in the province of Viterbo, Northern Lazio, Italy, approximately 50 kilometres north-west of Rome. This villa should not be confused with the Palazzo Farnese and the Villa Farnesina, both in Rome. A property of the Republic of Italy, Villa Farnese is run by the Polo Museale del Lazio. The Villa Farnese is situated directly above the town of Caprarola and dominates its surroundings. It is a massive Renaissance and Mannerist construction, opening to the Monte Cimini, a range of densely wooded volcanic hills. It is built on a five-sided plan in reddish gold stone; buttresses support the upper floors.

Cool star shaped design, huh?

Main point of interest: " Among the frescoed subjects of the contemplative winter suite is the famous "Room of the World Map" or Sala del Mappamondo, displaying the whole known world as it was in 1574 when the frescoes were completed. Above, the frescoed vault depicts the celestial spheres and the constellations of the zodiac."

Better resolution plus side maps:
Differences of old maps were of course already presented on this site, but still worth looking into.
For me the most confusing part is the asian islands, maybe related to this thread - sizes, shapes, positions are simply off.
Btw what's up with blurry blot new guinea? I suppose it was unexplored (information about the first landing dating to 1527 - source) but to me it looks like a cover-up.

Another points:
1. Antarctica without ice (or just strange coloring?)
2. Sahara with lakes and rivers? 400 year old Sahara Desert
3. Hyperborea - north pole? Hyperborea
4. Some unknown lakes - for example above the letter "A" in Tartaria
5. Australia not present, but officialy not discovered yet

It would be great if someone could visit and look at the maps first-hand as I believe even the "high-res" photo is not enough.
And maybe even spot some interesting things on other murals.

Note: Hope i did not screw up photos, because there seems to be a lot of confusion with mentioned buildings in Rome.

Pizzaro - During the exploration of Cuzco, Pizarro was impressed and through his officers wrote back to King Charles I of Spain, saying: "This city is the greatest and the finest ever seen in this country or anywhere in the Indies... We can assure your Majesty that it is so beautiful and has such fine buildings that it would be remarkable even in Spain."
