Le Sette Chiese Di Roma, Anno Santo 1575 (The seven churches of Rome . Holy Year 1575)



I find this one fascinating. It is packed with oddities.
- Mud flood abound
- Obligatory star fort
- Scale is odd (see people walking into St. Peter's
- What Rome is this?

Wiki snippet: The earliest records of the cult of the Seven Churches in Rome date back to at least the seventh century when St. Begga returning to live as a hermit in his country, returning from his pilgrimage to Rome, wanted to erect in addition to his other six speakers who gave the name to the monastery of "Sept-Eglises."

The expression "going around the seven churches" has assumed a negative value in the common language: it can mean - depending on the area - wasting time turning aimlessly or trying hard to find someone who listens.

In its original form it consists of a ring-route of about 20 km that touches the main churches of Rome at the time when the saint lived, the first four are the Papal Major Basilicas :

• Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano
• St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican
• Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls
• Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
• Basilica of San Lorenzo outside the walls
• Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem
• Sanctuary of the Madonna del Divino Amore (from the 2000 Jubilee , in place of the Basilica of San Sebastiano outside the walls )

Ruins, Jerusalem, pyramids. It's strange, like a compilation.

Don't know what to think about different size people. May be it is just weird perspective vision of the artist, or could it be to emphasize that various sizes were in existence?

And I would still love to find out what this 8-leaf rosette design is.

See what I found - A 1599 map illustrating Rome's 7 Pilgrim Churches - anything wrong with the picture?

Funny that this 1599 plan has fountains which were not even built yet. The Fountains of St. Peter's Square are two fountains in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City, created by Carlo Maderno (1612–1614) and Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1667–1677) to ornament the square in front of St. Peter's Basilica. The older fountain, by Maderno, is on the north side of the square.

And I have not even looked at anything else.
