Some images (in my opinion) do not correspond with the descriptions provided. I think that we have one of those images below. How a dead Sphinx lady could symbolize France is beyond my understanding. Anyways,
  • What do you think is going on in the image?
Image description:
  • Italian print published on the occasion of Napoleon's coming to power in France, November 9, 1799, following his successful campaign in Egypt. Image depicts France as a giant sphinx wearing the cap of Liberty and lying on architectural ruins and bodies. Behind the sphinx, Napoleon is unfurling a flag with his emblem of bees. The background shows a military camp within a fort, ships at sea, and four balloons flying in the distance. (Source: A.G. Renstrom, LC staff, 1981-82.)
  • Source - has a TIFF file for download

What/whose flag is this?

This seems to be a depiction of Saggitarius and whilst Napoleon and france used stars I couldn't find anything related to this flag in the list of his emblems in my admittedly short search

below is his flag and a list of his used emblems, well officially

Yup, that flag has a centaur looking creature on it. I tried to find a similar flag and came up with nothing myself.

Should probably try to dig through some ancient Roman legion type symbology.

Maybe Napoleon's empire was big into astronomy. They did venture around the world and reading the stars was a giant aspect of many ancient cultures. Now why would that be kept a secret though?

I don’t know what this huge dead sphinx and destroyed buildings have to do with astrology.

This is just a weird image in general. It’s probably that way due to us having no clue what we are looking at. The description appears to be made up.

May be if we figure out who else had this flag, we could get a better understanding.

The flag reminded me of the Saggitarius star sign and is surrounded by stars that's why, it is a weak assumption though I am happy to admit
I found an old french cognac brand using the centaur as their emblem but it's depicted with a spear instead

the ancient Babylonians used zodiac signs and I found a similar symbol but else I'm lost as to why the flag or the sphinx for that matter, I hope someone else will be able to contribute more.

There is some strange centaur related Napoleon stuff here on page 965.

Additionally, this gentleman has a centaur included in his coat of arms:
Also found this flag.

SPQR these are all additions to the original english alphabet if I'm not mistaken. Stands for Senātus Populusque Rōmānus
SPQR (Latin: Senātus Populusque Rōmānus, "The Roman Senate and People", or more freely as "The Senate and People of Rome"; Classical Latin: [sɛˈnaː.tus pɔpuˈlus.kʷɛ roːˈmaː.nus]) refers to the government of the ancient Roman Republic.

Kd your idea of looking for roman flags sounds apropos, given this definition. Akaya your sagitarrius idea is intriguing!

Here's a couple more pics of battles associated with spqr. Last one, in addition to 'mideival' garb, is that a machine gun that I see?IMG_6668.JPGIMG_6670.JPGIMG_6671.JPG

Check out this roman soldier insignia:

Maybe the 'air ballons' are actually orbs with the strings, etc. drawn on? Certainly don't look exact.IMG_6673.JPG

Woah good catch. Lady with six breasts and a compound being (centaur) could relate to diana ephesus thread. Check out how the child next to her is carrying wood, like a slave. I'll post link later today.

The image on the flag is the constellation Saggitarius as evidenced by the figure and stars. Cannot find any connection to Napoleon so presumably the figure in the fancy uniform isn't Napoleon.
Not in the least bit convinced Napoleon is even in this engraving.

These things on the hill are signalling devices.

These bastions are star fort bastions.

Whose soldiers are these. French, British, Hanoverian, Russian?

Who is this. Britannia, Minerva, Lady Liberte or something else?

King Prince or what?

Jesus holding the olive branch?

Another unknown crowned head, next the the fasces thing carring the sycthian cap.

Bishops, Jesuit, Friar and the papal banner? Bringing up the rear of the column, but in reality the head, to me at least.
bish.png

The only probable negro and a slave to boot, in the entire engraving and a tiny chap just to his right dressed as a Turk or Persian note the moustache.

Four oxen cart loaded with four horse sculpture. Symbolic possibly for the defeat of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse?

One horse cart loaded with books. A reference to the sacking of a library?

That's it for now.
