Wow, what an absolutely amazing (and entirely new to me) line of thought. I both relish and decry the diversity of this thread, as there are so many different facets to ruminate and ultimately speak to.
I’d like to start with the “opposing factions” of India trade being the “civil war”. Reading this struck a chord with me. History tends to repeat itself, and reading through the suppositions that maybe both sides were conflicted subsidiaries of a larger movement… well it relates to my profession.
I work for a payments company with a name synonymous with America/Love. It is subsidiary to a greater payments firm whose name is synonymous with Worldly. We are sibling to another subsidiary whose name is synonymous with Technology.
in the case of business, we are at war with Technology. Regardless of who wins each battle, America/Love or Technology, the spoils return to Worldly just the same. In a never ending power struggle, America and Technology undercut each other in a race to the bottom. Profit margins for each subsidiary trend down, while the ultimate goal is Worldly’s market share -> monopoly. As soon as markets are cornered, control can be exercised by Worldly while merchants enjoy the illusion of choice.
interestingly, there’s another player on the scene whose name is synonymous with Servitude. According to industry and market papers, they’re a big player… however I encounter them in the real world in maybe one out of 50 scenarios.
I have always wondered about the broadest scale in which this tactic may be employed, and perhaps this is it!
