Totally agreeing with Nomad here.

If such a collection would exist with the real McCoy nobody would exhibit it and nobody would ever get to see it. The owner would be shot, or skinned alive or roasted slowly like a chicken by TPTB, every record of him ever existing would be erased, and all his family and acquaintances would in the best case be MKULTRA'ed. The collection would either be completely destroyed and the ashes thrown in the sea, where the abyss is deepest, or it would be hidden away in the deepest vault not of the Smithsonian Institute but of some of the higher ranking entities within TPTB, maybe the Vatican archives or Rothschild's private collections. This is stuff that nobody, NOBODY! is ever supposed to see. I particularly like the little Cthulhu-thing and the little elder thing from Antarctica. Merrylin must have been into H. P. Lovecraft before it was cool.

Giant kudos to whoever did this, I would love to visit this place, it is absolutely amazing and speaks of outstanding creativity, craftsmanship and a true and deep love and understanding of everything that is considered "phantastic". It also shows excellent knowledge in comparative anatomy. The things are done believably. They could actually be real, functional creatures. It also completely nails the atmosphere of a true 19th century naturalist cabinet. So it actually is near perfection in my eyes, because it covers all the things that I love the most (except my family that is). I am absolutely sure that places exactly like this (meaning: even weirder) are somewhere to be found, but we will never get to see them, or if we do, it will be the last thing we see in our lives.

That's probably true of today's paradigm but of the time frame in question it may have been allowed or overlooked.

Now we can't even get through our day without unacceptable information being purged from the internet but back before there was a global information system in place, individuals could be individuals and not a part of the group think.
We have a lot of interesting artifacts from that time period.
Being individualistic meant there were also scammers and conmen, same as today. The work done on the specimens and cabinet is too labor intensive for a hustler looking to make a quick buck. I think they look authentic and wonder if there's any literature that was written about these specimens.

Aborted fetus's of both unborn or unhatched vertebrate along side with complete fabrications would be my estimation. We have to consider the epoch when these were being collected and realize how little was known. It would be relatively easy to create highly convincing props out of natural castaways. I think he was a believer, I want to believe, and had no experience with the cunning inhumanity practiced by other humans as exhibited by HollyHoly's link. He fell victim to his own delusions. Somewhere along the way his desire to find the truth clouded logical thinking. Some people did well feeding off his own gullibility.

As an example, one big problem I have are with the wings of the fairies. The wings and the bodies show a complete lack of understanding or even a pesudo study of dead creatures which could have been used to create more convincing mannequins. To support a body the size of a small bird would require feathered wings like a humming birds, or else much, much larger insect wings, and almost certainly there would have to be four of them like a dragonfly's wings, and neither of which would work without an entirely different chest cavity.

Insects like dragonflys have a box like configuration as the thorax chest cavity which supports and powers a novel design using a single hinged wing system. The box/thorax acts as a spring so that when spars inside the thorax (which connect to the wings) are pulled down the wings are pulled in to the up position, as this happens this box like configuration expands outwards, and when the muscle releases the wing spars the box pulls inwards acting like a spring which pulls the wings downwards in the power stroke which requires the greatest force and energy. It's similar to operating the oars on a boat but with powerful springs that are doing the hard work on the power stroke.

Logically a fairy would have to have a completely different anatomy than that of a human with regards to the chest area if they were using insect wings, and bird wings would require huge lungs and a much greater chest cavity just for starters. Since what is shown so greatly conflicts with rational known requirements, and since the wings shown are butterfly/moth wings, I am pretty confident those are fakes...unfortunately.
Still this is way Kool stuff to examine just from another perspective. It can teach us a lot.

all really good points like a flying horse always drawn like a regular horse with wings but in order to fly it would have to have hollow bones ,probably wouldn't have feathers but leathery wings like a bat, would have only two legs the hind ones, would have gigantic pectoral muscles etc. because a flying horse as drawn like fantasy drawings couldn't fly. A long time ago I had ducks and I really wanted baby ducks (I adore ducks) anyway my hen duck would sit a nest but before they hatched all my ducks would end up dead and I kept finding little dragon skeletons in my hen house , unhatched baby ducks look like dragons who knew? Interesting digression a friend Roger of Mudfossil Univerisity (the guy who found the dragon in Morocco found two dragons here in the US and he actually said they look like ducks.

They are magical... That is why their anatomy does not work biomechanically
